Options

There are so many options in today’s world – for just about everything!

Will I choose a PC or Mac? Will I choose an iPhone or an Android? Should I have a social media presence and, if I do, should I be on LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram .. or all three? Will I phone a friend or colleague, or should I reach out via email, text, or Messenger? Is a more personal approach a better option? If so, should I reach out via video on FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, or WhatsApp?

While the options my mind first ventured to simply denote the choices we have to interact with others, they represent the numerous selections we’re faced with today that those of just one generation ago didn’t even ponder. While some tech users are nearly religious in their device choices, many of those decisions don’t have a right or wrong answer. They’re simply preferences. Nearly all of the options will meet the need of the user and some will far exceed it. (I don’t know about you, but I don’t use all the features on my cell phone; do you?) These choices aren’t black and white. They’re about inclinations or likings.

But there are decisions in our lives today that go far beyond what we prefer. They include how to live and the manner in which we demonstrate what we believe. They reveal what we stand for at our core.

This is where today’s world differs little from the world of 3,000 years ago.

We don’t need to view advertisements to review the choices, post a question online to get others’ input, read a five-star review to help us decide, or hope a pop-up points us in the right direction.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

 Psalm 119:105

All we need do is turn to God’s Word. The Good Shepherd has provided the answers. He’s given us a guide. The Creator did not leave us waiting for what sounds right or feels good or seems the most palatable to those with whom we interact – whether in our families, at the workplace, or through social media.

He spoke through divinely inspired human authors over thousands of years to document and communicate His Word. He’s told us how to walk and where to go. Which direction to take for the choices in our lives that do have right answers and much longer-term implications. To provide for us. To protect us. And to allow His presence to overflow in our lives.

Are you following His guidance and the light He provided?
